Art, Music, and all that other mother jazz...

RADIO ZEITWARP

WTF ?

RADIO ZEITWARP

At the most basic level, Radio Zeitwarp is an online community built around the creative output from Zeitwarp Studios. It is free to join and provides a number of benefits to members such as exclusive art drops, free A4 prints, free digital downloads, and exclusive discounted pricing on Zeitwarp art & merch.

Beyond this it is an ongoing program to support musicians through direct funding, radio play, tour logistics and ultimately with performance opportunities.

FOR THE CULTURE

SOUND & VISION

FOR THE CULTURE

Radio Zeitwarp started life as an informal way of supporting touring musicians with somewhere to crash for free in between gigs.

From that basic beginning, the idea expanded to think in terms of assembling a community of people interested in Art & Music - completely free from the control and 'curation' of the social media algorithms. Then to harness that community to power a 'cultural association' that supports musicians and artists directly with funding, promotion' logistics and performance opportunities.

This was partly inspired by the Arroz Estúdios model in Lisbon.

GIG ECONOMY

HOW IT STARTED

GIG ECONOMY

Radio Zeitwarp actually began as an initiative to provide temporary free overnight accommodation to touring musicians.

Basically...a place to crash instead of sleeping in the car after a gig...which is the reality of touring life for a huge amount of musicians.

There's a storage room above the Zeitwarp art studio that was built out in a roof void. We started letting musician friends use it to get their head down after a gig in London. It didn't have a staircase or a toilet/shower. Just a basic place to shelter

The first band stayed there in 2017 and ever since then the number of different musicians has steadily grown to where it now has become a regularly used facility for a wide range of bands & solo musicians heading between the North & South of the UK.

The staircase might have helped. The toilet and shower definitely did.

We christened it 'The Caymana' after a long running in-joke about a short-lived 'tropical' cream liqueur brand from the 1990's.

ECONOMY OF SCALES

HOW IT'S GOING

ECONOMY OF SCALES

The post-Covid cost of living crisis has only exacerbated the economic challenge facing the bottom 95%* of touring musicians.

(*Made up statistic...but it's probably worse than that.)

A band that recently stayed in 'The Caymana' were a five piece that saved £600 on hotel rooms out of a £1000 gig fee.

So...yeah...one place can make a big difference...but it is still only one place.

The long-term plan is to scale up The Caymana as an informal network of free to stay crash pads for touring musicians.

A "Share BnB"...or maybe a 'FairBnB'...how about SnareBnB ? Besides there's a drumkit in the corner.

This is a parallel project to run alongside the Radio Zeitwarp TipJar. We're still working it out. By all means get in touch if you want to be involved.

CODA: WHY RADIO ?

"A LONG TIME AGO THERE WERE PIRATES"

CODA: WHY RADIO ?

When I was thinking about Radio Zeitwarp as an overall concept I was envisaging it as a kind of lifeboat / lighthouse thing to help and guide musicians on their career journey.  (The name obviously draws inspiration from the great pirate radio ships of the 1960's.)

Part of that is going to be broadcasting from Radio Zeitwarp itself.

Music 'selecting' has been a long term passion and I've been lucky enough to start doing a handful of live DJ sets over the last few years.

In terms of genres, my interest is in the spectrum of jazz-adjacent, high intensity/energy, electronic and experimental music. With a few notable exceptions, most of the bands and musicians out there making this type of music have relatively small followings. They're usually self-releasing their music and getting only occasional airplay. So I've decided to try to help them by setting up a dedicated radio show on MixCloud.

The show's called 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Jazz?' and it will be broadcast on a monthly basis to begin with.
